The Frontier in America lasted from 1607 until the great historian Frederick Jackson Turner stated that it had ended in 1893,The values and views of the frontier are a part of our heritage. They influence our perspective today. Dennis will also talk about pioneer superstition and speech, a most popular part of the program. Dennis might even add some Vigo County stuff.
Dennis J. Latta is the current Knox County Historian. He retired from the National Park Service after serving 31 years as a Park Ranger. For two years he was Executive Director of Grouseland President William Henry Harrison’s Home in Vincennes. He was ordained as an Episcopal Deacon in 1994 and a Priest in 1995. He is now the Rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Vincennes and Vicar of St. John’s Church in Washington, Indiana. He is past President of the Vincennes Historical and Antiquarian Society and is the current treasurer. He is the Past President of Vincennes Rotary 151. His wife Mary K. retired after teaching for 33 years for the Vincennes Community School Corporation. There are three children Katherine Bohmeier and family of Fishers, Jeffrey Latta and family of Vincennes, and Danielle Wilson and family of Clermont, Florida. There are six grandchildren.
