One woman’s journey as an

                           Indentured Servant

“…exceptin’ that now we didn’t belong to ourselves any longer, but to another man…”                                          - Maggie Delaney

Maggie’s story is a typical one of hardship and suffering.  Torn from their home and penniless, Maggie and her husband, along with their children, choose to take passage to the colonies to keep from starving and so join the ranks of many English, Scottish, and Irish emigrants  that fled their countries for a chance at a new life.  For those that were too poor to pay for passage, indenturing provided the means for them to travel to the colonies.  However, upon arriving in the colonies, they found that the life of an indentured servant was worth very little in the eyes of many masters and in those who bought and sold them.  Maggie’s tale will bring to light the difficult and heroic journey that many of our ancestors took to secure themselves in a new land.
