"Indiana Cemeteries - What You Need to Know!"

The Parke County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. May 14 on at the St. Joseph’s Fellowship Hall, 217 E Ohio St., in Rockville. The meeting will include a catered meal.

This year’s program is entitled, “Indiana Cemeteries — What You Need to Know!” The program presenter will be Jeannie Regan-Dinius, director of Special Initiatives with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources–Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.

The program will include a discussion of a variety of cemetery related topics including: Indiana Cemetery Law — What you can and cannot do; Cemetery and Gravestone Symbology — What do those symbols really mean; the Cemetery Sign Initiative — Identifying and marking cemeteries over 50 years old; the Historic Cemetery Marker Directory — What is the real name of that cemetery; and Cemetery Preservation — Best Practices to use in restoring gravestones.

In addition to attendance by members of the PCHS, the meeting is open to the public at large. However, all attendees must register and pay the $13 per person meal charge in advance of the meeting. Meals may not be purchased at the door.

Interested parties can register in advance at The Rockville Public Library; The PCHS Museum on U.S. 36 (open 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday); or by mailing their reservation to the Parke County Historical Museum, PO Box 332, Rockville, IN 47872. Please make checks payable to the Parke County Historical Society. In order to determine an accurate count for the catered meals, the deadline for registration is May 11.
