Dr. Roger Minert — retired in August 2019 after a career of 17 years as professor of Family History and Religious Education at Brigham Young University. He earned a B.A. in German at BYU, a M.A. in German literature, and a Ph.D. in German language history and second language acquisition at the Ohio State University. He has spent at least three years in Germany and one year in Austria on research activity. He is the author of more than seventy books and articles on German family history research and German pedagogy and was a private contractor in family history for twelve years. He has taught courses in family history research, German family history research, and German and Latin paleography. His areas of expertise include German family history research, German language/dialects in old vital records, German and paleography. His areas of research include History of German church records, German immigrants in the United States, deciphering archaic manuscripts, and German Latter-day Saints in World War II. He is a native speaker of German, advanced speaker of Dutch, basic speaker of French and Spanish, and a reader of Latin in vital records. He is widely recognized as one of the preeminent authorities in Germanic genealogy in the United States. Among books that he has published are German Immigrants in American Church Records, Volume 1, Indiana Protestant. This series now encompasses 27 volumes in 10 states. His most recent book is German Residential Records for Genealogists: Tracking Your Ancestor from Place to Place in Germany.
